Mr. Tu Ruihe joined the United Nations Environment Program in January 2018 as the representative of UNEP China Office a.
With more than 30 years of experience in the field of environment and sustainable development, Mr. Tu has successively engaged in the fields of environmental impact assessment, cleaner production, climate change, river basin water environment management, pollution prevention and biodiversity protection, and has rich experience in bilateral, regional and multilateral international cooperation affairs. Prior to current position, he served as the Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, during which he was serving as the main negotiator in the process of the international environmental governance system for work related to multilateral environmental agreements and helped promote China’s participation in the Minamata Convention, the Montreal Protocol, the Stockholm Convention, the Rotterdam Convention, the Cartagena Protocol on Biodiversity Safety, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. From 2008 to 2011, he served as the Deputy Director of the Xinjiang Environmental Protection Department, responsible for environmental impact assessment, environmental technology and education, and pollution prevention policies. From 1997 to 1998, he worked in the Economics Department of the Paris Office of the United Nations Environment Programme. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in physics and a Master’s degree in engineering.
